Why did my credit/debit card returned declined?
If your credit/debit card was declined and the error message states: "The transaction could not be completed. Please try again"
it may be due to the following issues:
- No credit or funds available on the card
- The card issuer wants to verify the transaction is legitimate, and the card owner needs to approve the online transaction
- If the credit card needs to be verified with the issuing bank, only the customer can contact their bank to approve the credit card's use.
If the error you receive states:
"The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit or debit card number."
it may be due to the following issues:
- Credit card is already linked or associated with a PayPal account
-
- If you are using a credit card that's already linked or assigned to a PayPal account, try logging into PayPal during the
payment process.
You can change the source of fund to make the payment after login to use the credit card instead of your PayPal balance.
- Credit card is previously used in a PayPal Account or has been assigned in a closed PayPal account
-
- PayPal remembers a credit card details even when it has been removed from the account.
This information is also remembered even if the PayPal account which was linked to the credit card is closed and deleted.
In this case, try another credit card, or assign the credit card to a PayPal account, and pay by logging into your PayPal account.
- PayPal limit on non-member credit card usage
-
- If you do not have a PayPal account there is a limit based on the number of times, the amount of the transactions and
the type of merchandise being sold that a credit card can be used within the PayPal system without having to verify
ownership by opening an account. The restriction is for security and fraud protection reasons. There is no
workaround to this limitation, but you should be able to use another credit card. If there is problem,
try using another email address, otherwise you will have to register a PayPal account.
- Credit card or email address raises a flag in the transaction
-
- Closely linked to reasons above, somes part of the transaction may raise a flag on the PayPal server that stop the
payment. Two possible flags are on the credit card or email address. Try changing either credit card or
email address or both when attempting to pay again.
- Cookies problem
-
- PayPal stores cookies on your PC/MAC (a text file about your login), these may inadvertantly clash by error.
Try using another web browser and/or delete cookies and attempt to pay via the PayPal checkout using the credit card again.
- Credit card is not confirmed in the PayPal account
-
- Contrary to some of the reasons above, if the credit card has been linked to an account,
but not yet confirmed this may be rejected. Try to complete all credit card information such as Card Verification Number or Security Code,
and confirm the card by entering the PayPal code shown on the credit card statement on special refundable charge by PayPal.
Ensure you add the credit card to PayPal account, and use it as funding source to pay the transaction through PayPal account.
